This is my response to this post on The Star Online Blog.

I agree when you say that there should be harsher punishments for rapists. The laws we have regarding it right now is not nearly enough. Public whipping sounds like a good idea too, but I disagree slightly with your last paragraph.

Rape is about power, not sex. Most rape are premeditated rather than be victims of chance and are usually done by someone the victim already know e.g. a neighbor, a friend, a relative. The number of those who "succumb to their baser needs" is relatively low. The number of rape cases and the severity of it on the rise though and as a woman and a mother of a little girl, I am deeply concerned.

I am very passionate about this issue. I really want to make a difference. Rape victims are just that - victims. They should not be penalized in any way for what was done to them. Those who commit this heinous crime not only violated their victims physically, but mentally as well. They should pay their dues in full and not with just a slap on the wrist.
